Wolftrap Goes Around the World

As in the past years, Wolftrap Elementary’s World Heritage Night 2009-2010 was a great success. Many countries were represented by displays and food tastings. The menu was as diverse as the world itself, with dishes from every corner of the world. We caught a glimpse of other cultures with bright performances and a fashion show from our own Wolftrap students and parents.

As added highlights we were introduced to an Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony by Ms. Negest Mamo; a martial arts demonstration by Mountain Kim; our own Chinese teachers, Mrs. Kearny and Mrs. Ping, teaching calligraphy; and music by professional musicians Mr. Raman Kalyan (flautist) and his accompaniment, Mr. Vijay Ganesh, playing the Mridangam (percussion instrument).

The Wolftrap Elementary staff, PTA support, parents, students, and many volunteers made the night educational, enriching, and festive!

Our sincere thanks,
Alex Button & Irina Heidt

Bikers and Walkers Break Records

Wolftrap Elementary participated in the annual Bike & Walk to School Challenge during the week of May 17– 21. A huge thank you to all the parents, grandparents, and bike friends for counting kids during the week and riding on the bike bus on Wednesday, May 19. A special thanks to John Brunow at bikes@vienna for loaning three racks that were filled on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (he also let us keep them for another week) and to Sue Hefler from Hefler Performance Coaching for helping on the bike bus.

The cyclists on Wednesday’s bike bus, organized by Wolftrap parent Jeff Anderson, rode about two miles through neighborhoods starting at Liberty Tree Lane, picking up other cyclists along the way.

Final totals for the week were 900A walkers and 174 bikers — equaling a total of 1,074, which surpasses last year’s total by 210 (864 last year). Walkers increased every day to a new one-day total of 254 on Friday, and the bike bus seemed to have broken out the bikers as they went from 14 and 9 on Monday and Tuesday to an average of 50 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. More importantly, we dropped kiss-and-ride usage by 50% from more than 140 on Monday to 70 on Friday.

Grades 1–6 had 346 out of 517 students participate for at least one day. A total of 66.9% of the students at Wolftrap biked or walked to school for at least one day. Mr. Batsel’s class won the classroom competition with 20/22 for 91% of the class. Mrs. Dallman and Mrs. Dowell (both second grade) tied for second with 21/25 for 84%. Two pedometers, two scooters, and a bike helmet were awarded to five lucky Wolftrap students as prizes in a raffle for the participants.

With good weather being more the norm, we hope that students and parents continue the trend for the last month of school! As always, be safe out there….

Girl Scout Troop Beautifies School Grounds

Girl Scout Troop 1843 decided to combine their work toward their Bronze Award in May with the continuing efforts of Wolftrap’s Growing Together Gardens.

The girls spent a recent Friday afternoon weeding the bed around the sign in front of the school. After removing several trash bags full of weeds, they planted several new blooms, which are now adding a new bit of color to the area around the sign.

The troop hopes to adopt this space going forward in order to maintain a lovely space around our school announcements. Thank you to the Girl Scouts!

Chess Club: Matches in May

The Wolftrap Chess Club had members traveling and competing all over in May. Pictured here with their first-place trophy are Trevor Louis, Luke Louis, Armin Dubert, and Christian Aliferis. They won it on May 2 in the Silver Knight Team Tournament held at OLGC School. Luke, Armin, and Christian also received Perfect Score trophies. Fantastic!

On May 7–9, Joseph and Francis Chen traveled to Atlanta to compete nationally in the 2010 B. Lerner National Elementary Championship. Both brothers’ scores were impressive. Joe was the only player from the state of Virginia who brought home a trophy in the K-5 section—he tied for fourth place—in the USA. Go, Joe!

Back closer to home, Aidan McMarty, Andrew Song, and Bennett Jackins teamed up in the St. Louis Scholastic tournament held in Alexandria on May 15. They are adding a third-place team trophy to the case and Bennett won a fifth-place trophy.

A team of 12 Wolfies battled in the Reston Bowl at Forest Edge Elementary on May 17. This was an extremely hard tournament and they managed to bring back a few wins and points, many competing for the first time. We are proud of Clark Bowden, Nick Long, Seamus Lawton, Peter Freck, Armin Dubert, Andreas Tsiaoushis, Johnny Tsiaoushis, Aidan McCarty, Daniel Zelkin, Henry Freck, Matthew Gearhart, and Will Wertheimer.
