A Very Snowy Thank You
The staff of Wolftrap Elementary School wants to thank each and every volunteer who came out to help during the Blizzard of 2010. Moms and dads, students, and community folks, who did not even have children at Wolftrap, made it possible for us to come back on February 15. Staff had a day to prepare for our students who we missed a great deal.

On Tuesday, February 16 and throughout our first week back, volunteers once again made it possible to get children to and from school safely and in and out of cars quickly. All of this was done with smiles and love. Thank you to all of you who helped. Each of you made a difference for us.

Fun on Ice

Wolftrap's Seventh Annual Skate Night was a huge success, with more than 125 families participating at Reston's SkateQuest on Saturday, January 20. Kids in all grades (and even a few Wolftrap alum) skated to songs such as the Black Eyed Peas' "I've Got a Feeling," Taylor Swift's "Love Story," and Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

When the lights went down on the rink, the party kicked into high gear. Even the faculty couldn't stay away. We saw Mrs. Nathlich out on the ice, while Dr. Blain, Ms. Price, Ms. Sandler, and Ms. Orasin watched from the sidelines. Co-chairs Jill Welsh and Ilana Feuchter wish to thank all the people who volunteered to help.

Chilly Checkmates

The Wolftrap Chess Club sent two teams out into the blizzards to compete in the ongoing ETL Tournament. Pictured are Nazar Ostapenko, Luke Louis, Christian Aliferis, and Trevor Louis, after playing Haycock Elementary and Sunrise Valley Elementary schools on February 13. Nicky Long and Bennett Jackins teamed up with Nazar and Trevor on February 20 to play against Louise Archer and Churchill Road Elementary schools.

Hard matches, but they brought back 8½ wins and a few more match points to keep Wolftrap in the hunt. Great teamwork! Two more to go ....

Katie Li competed in the DC Junior Open and was awarded a Bronze medal. We are proud of her!

Emulating Women Artists

In February, students participated in a wide variety of GRACE Art creativity, as the featured artists were women artists from the 16th century to the present. Included among the class projects were portrait drawing, animal drawing, paper chains, collages, mosaics, Schapiro shapes (action figures made from a variety of shapes cut from colored paper), and Marisol sculptural portraits. The latter are sculptures made from found objects, such as wood, plastic, yarn, leather, and fabric, and the Marisol sculptures are most often humorous and fun.

Pictured here is an example of the Marisol sculpture of Miss Brewer, energetically assembled by her fifth-grade class.

A Traveling Science Show

Wolftrap students were energized this month by a visit from the Franklin Institute’s Traveling Science Show. Pete, our guest from Philadelphia’s premier science museum, taught students all about energy—from the meaning of the term, to the different types of energy, to the laws of energy. Students assisted Pete with many demonstrations, including bouncing balls and kinetic energy, music boxes and sound waves, and a Rube Goldberg machine that made paper catch on fire and vanish into thin air!

The Franklin Institute’s visit was funded by your PTA dollars designated for Cultural Arts assemblies. Thank you for your support. We hope the students’ enthusiasm for the science assembly leads to some exciting experiments at the Edison Expo.
