Thanks from the PTA President

Dear Wolftrap Families,
At the risk of sounding like an 80-year-old, I am going to say, wow, time seems to be flying by. The fact that it is almost March is mind-boggling. Although I am quite ready for more spring-like days, I am wishing that time would slow down a bit. I am quite sure I am feeling this way due to the fact that my elementary school days are coming to an end. … We have so many memories from our time at Wolftrap, memories that would not exist if not for our amazing Wolftrap staff and parent volunteers. I apologize in advance for I am also quite sure I will get more sappy and nostalgic as the year goes on.
I would like to say thank you to all committee chairs and volunteers who have put in so much time and effort to make the Wolftrap PTA programs and events possible and to all the others who are in the midst of planning their events now! It is truly amazing how our families give of themselves to make it all possible. In addition to running all the PTA programs and events, families are now coming forward to form committees to lobby for better nutrition and to support the new technology wing. We are surrounded by talented and impassioned families! The remainder of the year is filled with fun events for all….
I would also like to give a special thank you to JoAnne Hammermaster, Sandy Cole and Lisa Calhoun—the amazing PTA Board. These are a hard-working and supportive three! On behalf of the PTA Board, I would also like to thank Anita Blain, Kim Price and the entire Wolftrap ES staff—another amazing bunch!
The PTA send wishes for a wonderful spring!
Gail Ayers

Wolftrap continued the tradition of its annual Talent Show on Friday, February 4, in the James Madison High School auditorium. Organized by Julie Heiden and Betsy Prescott, this year’s production was amazing as always, with more than 50 acts.
Students played piano, sang, danced, did gymnastics, performed skits, did guitar acts, drums and more. There were six excellent show announcers, who introduced each group of acts and provided great narration. The sixth graders ended the night with a song-and-dance number up and down the aisles of the auditorium, belting out “Time of My Life” as the evening’s final surprise act.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this year's Talent Show!

Math Counts for Wolftrap “Mathletes”
|
Nine sixth-graders from Wolftrap's Mathcounts club competed in the Fairfax Chapter Mathcounts competition on Saturday, February 5. The following "Mathletes" represented Wolftrap: Ryan Batsel, Nicole Carrillo, Sarah Cole, Emily Gibson, Dannie Griggs, Claire Heiden, Nicky Long, Diana Lowther and Surya Mehta.
Congratulations to all, and to Emily Gibson who won a trophy as Wolftrap's high scorer. Thanks to Dr. Blain for coming out to cheer on the team!
Wolftrap's Mathcounts club has been meeting since September, solving math problems and practicing problem-solving strategies. Kevin Fogerty, Phillip Fox, Matt Gearhart, Audra Kim and Eva Varghese are the other members of the club, which is coached by Mike Gibson and Brian Batsel.
Current fifth graders should get ready, because the Wolftrap Mathcounts club will be bringing some Mathcounts problem solving to you later in the school year!

Chess Wolfies Venture Out into Frozen February
|
|
Chess Club welcomed new members this month. The club has almost 70 members, all learning at their own pace. We are excited to report that new players are trying the county’s competitive offerings.
Currently, Wolftrap is still “in the hunt” in the ETL league tournament held at the U.S. Chess Center in Washington, D.C. On February 12, Luke Prillaman, John Paul Prillaman, Conrad Listman and Lilo Dubert competed, bringing back more wins. On February 26, Paul Carrillo, Aidan McCarty, Luke Louis and Lilo Dubert added more wins and secured two match points. Only two more matches to go.
Seven Wolfies pictured here joined forces to compete in the “February Freeze” tournament on February 13 at OLGC Church in Vienna. They won first place team for U/900 section! We also had three players awarded individual trophies. Luke Jackins, John Paul Prillaman (sixth-place trophy), Christian Aliferis, Luke Louis (third place), Armin Dubert, Bennett Jackins (second place) and Conrad Listman had a big day practicing their new moves. Lilo Dubert and her Wolftrap first-grade sisters, Annica and Ilse, also competed in the beginner section. Even though Ilse is not in our club (yet), we are proud to announce she won a trophy, too.
Floris Quads were held on February 24 at Floris Elementary in Herndon. Clark Bowden, Luke Louis, Bennett Jackins, Luke Jackins and Conrad Listman each tried to win their assigned “quad.” All played great with Clark and Luke Louis securing first-place trophies in their quads!
