Bike-Walk to School Week

May 16th-May 20th is Wolftrap's Bike & Walk to School Challenge - Rain or Shine

What better way to get your mind clear for SOLs than by walking or biking to school. As always, safety is the most important thing we can teach our children and as such Bike and Walk week is 100% voluntary. However we do encourage parents to walk at least one day during the week, join one of the walking school buses or form your own, ride w/ Wolfie on the Bike Train. Some ideas for kids who normally ride the bus include include parking on Liberty Tree or in Eurdora and walk in from there.

Volunteers Needed Please go here to help us count kids... http://www1.mysignup.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?datafile=bikewalkweek2011 Please arrive by 810a and stay until 840a when school officially starts. You'll need a clipboard and pencil/paper. Email your counts (kids and bikes and kids and cars for KissNRide) to saferoutes@wolftrappta.org

Walking to School: As of now there will be three walking school buses running during the week. What is a walking school bus? Well its a group of kids walking together for safety and security and to give parents who can't usually walk to school piece of mind that their children will be supervised and arrive at school on time. Three walking buses will be taking place but more can be added if Parents want to organized one. If the route or time doesn't fit your schedule than walking as you normally do is great too.

Mon, Thurs and Fri - Pascale Centola will be leading a walking bus leaving from the top of Liberty Tree. Departure is at 8.10 AM.

Tues and Wed - Shelia Ribeiro will be leading a walking school bus also leaving from the top of Liberty Tree and walking down Beulah to Wolftrap. Departure is at 8.10 AM\

Thurs and Fri - Leslie Carl will be leading a walking school bus leaving from the top Abbotsford Drive. Departure is at 8.15 AM.

Biking to School: Kids are encouraged to bike to school as normal also but Wolfie will be running Bike Trains each day all week.  (Details about the bike train are here.)  We hope to have special guests all week long   So far:

Monday - Charlie Strunk - Fairfax DOT Bicycling Coordinator is rumored to be riding with us. Charlie is helping to make Fairfax County a better place to walk and bicycle.

Tuesday - Chris Eatough - 6 Time 24 Hour Solo Mountain Bike World Champion and 5 Time National Champion will be joining us. Chris recently retired from the sport to spend more time with his wife and two small children and is Arlington County's Bicycle Coordinator. Here's a short film on Chris. http://www.grippedfilms.com/24play.html

Wednesday - Supervisor Hudgins of Hunter Mill will be riding with our kids. She's a big supporter of SRTS (as well as Full Day Kindergarten)!!!

Friday - The coup de grace of Special Guest week will be our very own Dr. Blain - back for her second bike train ride and a huge supporter of Safe Routes to School.

PARENTS:
Although there is no formal bicycle or pedestrian training as part of Bike/Walk Week - please remind your children of basic safety practices and/or watch this video with them.

Elementary Schools in Vienna seem to be the hub of SRTS activity in Northern Virginia so it's important that we show Fairfax County and FCPS that this is an important issue. Thanks for your support and special thanks to bikes@vienna's NEW owner Tim Fricker who is donating extra bike racks for the week.
